Sumber Daya Manusia (SDM) merupakan faktor terpenting dalam suatu organisasi atau perusahaan, keterlibatan SDM dalam perusahaan terimplementasi dalam bentuk tenaga kerja, pegawai atau karyawan. Karyawan sebagai sumber daya manusia dalam suatu perusahaan merupakan faktor penting bagi peningkatan produktifitas atau kemajuan perusahaan tersebut. Bagaimanapun canggihnya sarana dan prasarana suatu perusahaan, tanpa ditunjang oleh kehandalan karyawan (SDM) maka perusahaan tersebut tidak akan dapat maju dan berkembang.
SDM juga memiliki keunikan yang bersifat dinamis, keunikan disini maksudnya adalah meskipun fungsi yang dilaksanakan sama namun dalam praktik dan penerapannya tidaklah sama persis, hal ini terkait dengan karakter manusia itu sendiri serta ditunjang oleh kondisi perusahaan. Karakter manusia tersebut terkait dengan faktor motivasi kerja, kompetensi, budaya dan lain-lain. Seringkali dikatakan bahwa SDM adalah aset penting suatu organisasi, atau kunci utama keunggulan bersaing perusahaan, akan tetapi yang terjadi adalah sebaliknya, SDM terkadang menjadi beban bahkan menggerogoti kelangsungan hidup perusahaan. Berdasarkan kajian, terungkap bahwa SDM yang menjadi aset perusahaan adalah mereka yang memiliki kompetensi tinggi sesuai kebutuhan organisasi, namun kompetensi saja tidak cukup untuk dijadikan indikator utama prestasi kerja karyawan, faktor lain yang berperan signifikan adalah motivasi kerja serta kemampuan karyawan dalam mengimplementasikan nilai-nilai budaya perusahaan dalam setiap aktifitas kerja mereka demi mencapai kinerja yang optimal.
Makna kinerja karyawan merujuk pada kemampuan karyawan dalam melaksanakan keseluruhan tugas-tugas yang menjadi tanggung jawabnya. Tugas-tugas tersebut biasanya didasarkan pada indikator-indikator keberhasilan yang sudah ditetapkan. Sebagai hasilnya akan diketahui bahwa seseorang karyawan masuk dalam tingkatan kinerja tertentu dan tingkatannya pun ada bermacam istilah. Kinerja karyawan dapat dikelompokkan ke dalam tingkatan kinerja tinggi, menengah atau rendah, dapat juga dikelompokkan melampaui target, sesuai target atau di bawah target. Berangkat dari hal-hal tersebut, kinerja dimaknai sebagai keseluruhan unjuk kerja dari seorang karyawan.
Perusahaan harus mampu memfasilitasi tumbuhnya budaya organisasi serta memahami pentingnya menjadikan sumber daya yang dimiliki bisa dikelola untuk dapat mengelola kinerja yang memberdayakan perusahaan dan seluruh karyawannya. Budaya merupakan implementasi dari attitude atau sikap yang menjadi perpaduan antara nilai-nilai yang ditanamkan perusahaan dalam rangka mencapai tujuan perusahaan dengan persepsi karyawan dalam upayanya bertahan di perusahaan, sedangkan budaya perusahaan mengandung nilai-nilai yang dianut oleh perusahaan. Budaya perusahaan mampu melakukan sejumlah fungsi yang dapat mengatasi permasalahan anggota organisasi untuk beradaptasi dengan lingkungan eksternalnya, yaitu dengan memperkuat pemahaman anggota organisasi serta kemampuan untuk merealisasi visi, misi dan strategi organisasi, agar budaya dapat diresapi dan diaplikasikan oleh segenap karyawan dalam perusahaan maka perlu adanya proses internalisasi. Internalisasi merupakan proses menanamkan dan menumbuh kembangkan suatu nilai atau budaya perusahaan menjadi bagian dari diri karyawan yang bersangkutan.
Beberapa penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa budaya perusahaan memberikan pengaruh positif terhadap kinerja karyawan dan penerapan strategi perusahaan. Budaya organisasi yang terbina dengan baik dalam perusahaan akan mempengaruhi perilaku karyawan yang selanjutnya akan bermuara pada prestasi kerja karyawan. Berbagai tindakan yang dilakukan oleh seseorang tentunya berbeda-beda dalam bentuk perilakunya. Dalam organisasi, implementasi budaya dirupakan dalam bentuk perilaku, artinya perilaku individu dalam organisasi akan diwarnai oleh budaya organisasi yang bersangkutan. Perilaku karyawan yang sesuai dengan budaya organisasi tersebut akan memberikan efek pada meningkatnya kinerja karyawan, karena budaya perusahaan ditetapkan oleh manajemen demi mewujudkan visi dan misi perusahaan yang salah satunya adalah menciptakan kompetensi karyawan yang berkinerja tinggi. Dengan demikian budaya organisasi menjadi salah satu kriteria penting dalam menentukan pertumbuhan dan kesuksesan perusahaan.
Budaya organisasi merupakan “ruh” organisasi, karena disana bersemayam filosofi, visi dan misi organisasi yang akan menjadi kekuatan penting bagi perusahaan untuk berkompetisi. Budaya organisasi tersebut mampu membentuk perilaku sesuai yang diharapkan oleh perusahaan terkait dengan kinerja karyawan. Perilaku yang selaras dengan kebijakan perusahaan akan mampu menciptakan kepuasan kerja bagi karyawan sehingga kepuasan kerja itu dapat menjadi pemicu kinerja karyawan yang berkualitas sesuai harapan perusahaan. Pada dasarnya semakin positif perilaku kerja karyawan maka semakin besar pula kepuasan kerjanya, sehingga memberikan dampak pada si karyawan untuk mampu meningkatkan kinerjanya. Karyawan yang sudah memahami keseluruhan nilai-nilai organisasi akan menjadikan nilai-nilai tersebut sebagai kepribadian organisasi. Nilai dan keyakinan tersebut akan diwujudkan menjadi perilaku keseharian mereka dalam bekerja, sehingga akan menjadi kinerja individual dan masing-masing kinerja individu yang baik akan menimbulkan kinerja organisasi yang baik pula.
Beberapa indikator yang dapat dijadikan sebagai elemen budaya organisasi antara lain :  inovasi dan pengambilan resiko, agresifitas dan kerjasama tim.  Inovasi dan pengambilan resiko merupakan salah satu elemen budaya organisasi. Indikator tersebut merupakan tingkatan dimana para karyawan terdorong untuk berinovasi dan mengambil resiko. Kalau semula karyawan kurang diberi peluang untuk mencoba sesuatu yang baru agar terhindar dari resiko, maka dengan memberikan kepercayaan kepada karyawan untuk mencoba sesuatu yang baru walaupun resikonya cukup besar, hal tersebut akan dapat meningkatkan prestasi kerja karyawan. Pada indikator agresifitas maknanya merupakan suatu tingkatan dimana karyawan memiliki sifat agresif dan kompetitif. Karyawan yang semula dikelola berdasarkan orientasi peraturan, kini dikelola dengan orientasi hasil yang kompetitif. Sejauh hasil yang dicapai lebih menguntungkan dan dapat dipertanggung jawabkan peraturan tidak harus dipegang teguh agar dapat meningkatkan kinerja karyawan. Yang terpenting adalah bagaimana meningkatkan keagresifan dan motivasi karyawan dalam beraktifitas pada pekerjaannya. Sedangkan indikator orientasi tim merupakan suatu tingkatan dimana kegiatan kerja diorganisir diantara tim kerja, bukannya per individu . Karyawan tidak lagi difokuskan untuk berkompetisi demi kemajuan dirinya tetapi pada kerjasama demi kepentingan bersama. Untuk meningkatkan kinerja karyawan, maka sebaiknya orientasi kerja karyawan tidak lagi berorientasi pada hirarki (status dan pangkat) tetapi bergeser pada fokus jaringan kerja profesional tanpa memperhatikan pangkat dan status. Kalau sebelumya karyawan dalam pengambilan keputusan semula kurang dilibatkan, kini karyawan semakin ditekankan dan dilibatkan dalam satu kesatuan tim secara maksimal dalam pengambilan keputusan. Seseorang tidak mungkin secara mutlak berdiri sendiri tanpa orang lain, sesuai kodrat manusia sebagai mahluk individu dan sosial, atau sosok mandiri tetapi perlu manunggal bersatu kompak dengan orang lain. Sebagai sumber daya insani, maka perlu bersatu kompak untuk bersama-sama mewujudkan kinerja yang baik.
